TOP 10 STEPS TO FINDING YOUR NEXT JOB
Personal marketing, action plans, marketing yourself, job searching – all of these terms
mean the same thing in a manner of speaking. You are indeed the product
– so you will need to prepare the product, and then market it
assertively to achieve the goal of landing a new job.
For purposes of this article we will assume
that you have spent considerable time evaluating you – perhaps some
testing, other exercises to determine what you have to sell e.g. skills,
values, interests, etc. Your resume has been professionally prepared,
and now you are ready to begin your job search.
The first thing most folks do is grab a
newspaper and look at the classifieds, and while there is nothing wrong
with this approach, let's hope that it is only one of 10 ways you will pursue that new position.
The following list is what I call an Action Plan, and no matter what
level of experience you are at (entry level or senior executive), you
need to develop this Action Plan to suit your specific needs.
1) PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS:
You need to notify every member of your affiliations that you are
looking for a new position, and the ideal thing would be to provide them
with a copy of your basic resume. If you don't belong to any
associations at the present time, consider joining now – it is a
positive move, provides good networking with peers, and may offer you
the new opportunity you are looking for as well.
2) PEOPLE YOU KNOW: This
is an often-overlooked area, and is the number one opportunity for
landing your next position – often referred to as networking. Included
in this group are church members, friends, acquaintances, former
co-workers/colleagues, neighbors, former employers and relatives. Former
employers is often the most overlooked area for finding a new position,
but if you had a good relationship with the company and enjoyed working
for them, they may very well have a need for your present skills. Begin
by making a list of people in each category above, and then get a copy
of your most recent resume into their hands. They may "know" you, but
seldom will they know what specific skills you have that might be of use
in the companies they work for.
3) CAREER FAIRS: It has been said
that the career fair is like a job interview...multiplied many times
over. Consequently, you will have to prepare just as you would for an
interview. That means getting a list of companies that will be
attending, and researching the ones you are most interested in. From
there it is a matter of dressing as for an interview, and with many
resumes in hand, put your best foot forward, your hand out to shake, all
while wearing your best smile).
4) RECRUITERS: Many industries
have recruiters who do the looking for their specific employment needs.
When accessing this particular area, be certain that you are in the
right area – research recruiters online, and then email your resume to
only the appropriate recruiters for your specific career industry.
5) NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENTS: This
option is often thought to be the number one area where people find
their jobs, but this is totally untrue – only about 6% of job seekers
finds their new jobs this way. While this needs to be an area where you
search, be sure it isn't the only area!! Search local papers as well as
national and regional publications.
6) ONLINE: Job searching online
is a new world to many people and thus it is scary. However, taking a
class on the Internet through community education is a good place to
start if you have no experience with the World Wide Web. From there it
will be all downhill. You will be able to access Monster.com and
numerous other places online to post your resume, as well as responding
to individual corporate web sites career listings.
7) TRADE MAGAZINES: Another often
overlooked area for finding new opportunities. The trade magazines
usually include a classified section for help wanted, and if this is
often overlooked, it cuts your competition considerably!
8) EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES: Another
one of your key people to talk with is employment agencies who deal with
your industry and level of interest. The best way is to select a
position where the employer pays the agency fee.
9) INDUSTRY COMPETITORS: In your
particular industry your competitors would often be interested in the
fact that you are available, and seeking new employment. They may
already know you, or know of you, and if you didn't sign a non-compete
clause in your past employment, you can notify them immediately with a
broadcast letter. This option offers you work in an industry with which
you are already familiar.
10) CORPORATIONS:
Consider this area of job searching with regard to selling your skills.
That is, while you may not be an expert in their industry, you do have
wonderful transferable skills that they would most certainly be
interested in. Skills like sales or marketing expertise can be
"transferred" from one company to another, so while the industry is
different, your skills are still needed!
There are numerous success factors to landing the new job you
are seeking. One of the most important is the way you handle the job
search itself! You can have the best skills in the world, but if the
right people don't know you are available, it won't matter much. The
real secret is to follow each and every one of the steps above, and you
will achieve success!
If all of this seems overwhelming, or you just want to hire a
professional to enhance your experience and arrive faster at your goal,
consulting services are available by phone (called TeleCoaching) or
Instant Messaging or Email as well.
